Choosing marble or travertine for your table
The choice of stone plays a central role in the character, appearance and everyday experience of a table. Each material has its own colour, veining, surface structure and degree of natural variation.
Our marble and travertine tables are designed for everyday dining and family life. Natural stone is durable, substantial and long-lasting, while every slab gives the finished table an individual character.
This guide compares the materials in our table collection and explains how colour, movement, finish and natural variation influence the final piece.

Natural stone in everyday life
Our marble and travertine tables are designed for daily use, including dining, working and family life.
Natural stone is durable, substantial and long-lasting. Each table is professionally sealed before delivery to protect the surface and make everyday care straightforward.
As with wood, leather and other natural materials, the surface may gradually develop subtle traces of use. These changes form part of the character of the stone and do not affect the function or quality of the table.
Spills should be wiped up promptly, and acidic or abrasive cleaning products should be avoided. For detailed cleaning and maintenance instructions, see our Table Care Guide.
Travertine
Travertine is characterised by natural pores, cavities and linear movement. These features are part of the stone rather than defects.
Its warm colour palette and architectural surface make it particularly suitable for tables with a calm, substantial presence. Travertine generally has less dramatic veining than marble, but its texture and tonal variation give it depth.
Filled travertine
The natural cavities are filled with a colour-matched compound before the surface is finished. This creates a smoother and more practical tabletop while preserving the visual character of the stone. Filled travertine is generally the most suitable option for dining tables.
Partially filled or unfilled travertine
Some cavities remain open, creating a more textured and visibly natural surface. This finish is particularly effective on bases, vertical surfaces and sculptural elements. For frequently used tabletops, we generally recommend a filled or carefully selected partially filled finish.
Marble
Marble is known for its depth, veining and wide range of colours. Its appearance can vary from quiet and restrained to highly expressive.
Compared with travertine, marble usually has a denser and smoother visual surface. A honed finish gives it a softer, more understated appearance, while a polished finish brings greater depth, contrast and reflection.
The scale and direction of the veining are especially important on a tabletop. A strong pattern can turn the table into the central visual element of a room, while a quieter stone allows the form and proportions of the design to take the lead.
Honed or polished finish
Honed finish
A honed finish has a smooth, matte or softly satin surface. It gives the stone a quieter, more contemporary appearance and reduces reflections.
Polished finish
A polished finish has a reflective surface and brings out the colour, contrast and depth of the stone. It is particularly effective on darker and more strongly coloured marbles.
The available finish depends on the material and table design. We can advise which option is most appropriate during the planning process.
Natural variation and slab approval
Natural stone cannot be selected from a small sample alone. Pattern, veining, mineral deposits, tonal differences, pores and natural fissures vary across every slab.
Before production begins, we provide images of the proposed slab for your approval. This allows you to review the overall colour, movement and character of the actual stone that will be used for your table.
Where relevant, we also consider the direction of the veining and how the slab will be distributed across the tabletop and base elements.
The slab approval process gives you a clear understanding of the stone before it is cut while preserving the natural individuality of the finished table.
Which material should I choose?
For a warm and calm appearance, Roman Travertine is a natural starting point.
For stronger linear movement and a cooler architectural character, consider Silver Travertine.
For a light and restrained marble, Carrara Bianco is the quietest option in the collection.
For bold grey veining on a light background, Arabescato Corchia creates a stronger statement.
For highly expressive colour and movement, Rosso Orobico is the most dramatic choice.
For deep burgundy colour and refined white veining, Rosso Levanto offers a rare and luxurious presence.
For a warm, dark table, Dark Emperador creates depth and elegant contrast.
There is no universally best stone. The right choice is the material whose colour, movement and character suit your space and the way you want to live with the table.
Choosing the right material
The material should work with the proportions of the table, the light in the room and the character you want the finished piece to have.
We can help you compare suitable stones, finishes and available slabs before production begins.
